I have homework due tomorrow

Library of Congress Subject Headings make no sense. I spent the morning wrestling with the definitive four volume 2005 edition, and they make no sense. Also, they make no sense to anyone else either.

I know, I know, I should have done my homework last week. But just think, if I had, I’d no longer be me, would I? I’d be a pod person, and that involves running screaming into traffic, and I am just not in the mood.

  1. LCSH are indeed a nonsensical annoyance. I had to do some work on Universal Decimal Classification las year, and that was a positively simple joy compared to the Subject Headings. My sympathies.

  2. Any list of that sort that requires four volumes has got to be confusing. I’ve used libraries that used both methods of classification, and books are just as difficult to find for the non-professional in both.
