Pssssttttttt - Mr Librarian - the title is a reference to Lewis Carrol:

"`Well, there was Mystery,' the Mock Turtle replied, counting off the subjects on his flappers, `--Mystery, ancient and modern, with Seaography: then Drawling--the Drawling-master was an old conger-eel, that used to come once a week: HE taught us Drawling, Stretching, and Fainting in Coils.'"

I'd like to look learned, but in fact I cheated: http://www.dalton.org/ms/alice/54.html

Sounds like an interesting range of books. My current to-be-read pile consists of three (fictional) books about Vikings that someone thought I might like. They may never be read. I also have various books on my shelves because I thought they would be useful to own, but I've never read them and probably never will.

I enjoyed Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, so I might seek out some other of Susannah Clarke's offerings. I haven't read any David Lodge or Richard Dawkins. I'm quite tempted to read RD's latest, just because I'm a glutton for punishment. However, I think I would be in danger of throwing it against the wall after a few chapters, if indeed he harangues his readers as much as I've heard he does.

I hope you're feeling better...

PS - Your post title sounds like it should be a deep anagram, or possibly a cryptic crossword clue. Or both. It's a good title, anyway.

Oh dear, I didn't know that Clarke had poured more things forth from her wondrous pen, either. Add me to the list of people adding her to their own teetering piles of To-Be-Read books. She'll bury poor old Wodehouse, and Cervantes, and goodness knows who else.

I too like David Lodge, in both fictional and lit crit modes. Engaging and interesting most of the time. And Neil Gaiman is like unto a deity as far as I'm concerned. Wonderful, talented man.

I don't think I want to be harangued by Dawkins, although I certainly do agree that finding more out about things doesn't diminish the sense of wonder. DNA fills me with awe when I think about it, no matter how much more I find out about how it does what it does. I'm sure Dawkins would prefer it if my awe didn't feature God, but phooey to him (Dawkins, not God).

Thank you for sharing your reading spree with us.

Ooh, I'm going to seek out the Susanna Clarke book. I loved Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and had also been thinking: "More of the same, please!"

I hope you are feeling, if not better, at least OK. I have been worried about you across cyberspace. Please take care!

By the way, a bit Roger Irrelevant here, but what is the best way to mend a Thomas the Tank Engine book where the first few pages have dropped out?

A concussed budgie? They have very little attention span to begin with. . . Your list puts my reading to shame. I've been indulging in mysteries and memoirs lately.

Ooooh. The Norris woman has got something else out.

*Does a hand wringing dance* But I have so many other books I should be reading...

Reading is definitely the way to go when you are feeling uncentred and out of sorts.

Stop bloody taunting me. I've just packed more than 2000 books (including, apparently, the 8 or so that I was in the middle of) into boxes: now I have to haul them into my attic. That way, the electrician can clamber over them, muttering darkly in Arabic, while he re-wires my house. Why can't builders renovate AROUND me? I could use some underpinning and a nice fresh coat of magnolia.
Still, it's a good excuse to go and buy more Graham Greene. Now, if I can just locate an armchair, and someone to bring me tea...does the Editor have a cousin?
